Investiture Ceremony of the Captains Regent

Twice yearly, with one installment falling on October 01, the ancient republic of San Marino inaugurates its dual heads of state through an elaborate investiture. This historical tradition, unbroken since medieval times, epitomizes one of the world's oldest surviving constitutional practices. Trumpeters herald the ceremony from Piazza della Libertà, while dignitaries parade in period regalia through cobblestone streets. Crossbow demonstrations and folkloric performances constitute the day's cultural activities, drawing spectators eager to witness continuity spanning centuries. The Captains Regent, elected for brief six-month terms, symbolize San Marino's enduring commitment to power-sharing governance, resisting autocratic consolidation since antiquity.
